Terry's Biography

Born in St. Lucia, St. Maarten is home to Terry J. Peterson who holds a Post-graduate diploma in Supra-National Criminal Law from the Grotius Center For International Legal Studies, Leiden University, The Hague. He possesses an LLM:Masters of Law in International Law and Human Rights from Coventry University, United Kingdom and he holds BA in Theology from Andrews University, Michigan, USA.

He is also pursuing an MSC (external) in Drugs, Alcohol & HIV: Policy and Intervention with Imperial College, University of London, UK. As Community Coordinator for Drug Prevention at the Turning Point Foundation, St. Maarten, Netherlands Antilles, he has collaborated with solicitors in drafting substance abuse policies and community prevention programs.

He is a strong advocate of social justice, children rights, human Rights, Penal Reform and the "alternatives to incarceration project for drug addicts. As you will observe, he has significant experience working with young people, staff in schools, the Youth Service and other agencies identifying the needs and views of young people in relation to drug education and healthy lifestyles and developing informal educational programmes to meet those needs.

He also contributed to the development and implementation of informal drug education and programmes targeted at vulnerable young people. These programmes included refusal skills, developing self-esteem and confidence, developing positive role models, the production of resources, healthy lifestyles and peer education programmes.

He was able to liaise with the Education Department, staff in schools, Youth Service and other agencies on the implementation and delivery of drug education programmes targeted at vulnerable young people and juvenile offenders. He has acquired specialist knowledge of international law and international relations as they affect decisions on human rights at both the international and domestic levels.

He believes he can make a positive contribution in the area of human rights, and is a champion for human rights causes worldwide. In England, he served as student representative on the LLM Board at Coventry University.

He also volunteered at a number of international NGOs, for example: with Amnesty International in 2003 as a Contributor to the “Human Rights Think Tank,” Student Action Network (STAN) at the National Student Conference, Sussex University; with Oxfam & IANSA, ‘03 as a Contributor & Participant in Control Arms Campaign for Global Arms Treaty; with Student Volunteering England, ‘04 as a Contributor and Delegate in SVE National Student Conference; Horizon Volunteering Coventry University & Warwick University ’03-‘04, as a Volunteer at Coventry Peace House, CUSV Volunteer at Coventry Refugee Center, CUSV Volunteer at Onley Youth Offending Teams, and WUSV and Member & Contributor to STAR: Student Action for Refugees, CUSV.

He has attended student excursions at ITLOS, ECJ, NATO, EU, ICC, OPCW, ICJ and the ECrtHR. Above all, he would like to make a contribution to the world in the area of International Relations and Diplomacy; Drugs, Crime & Human Trafficking Prevention, Prisoners Rights, Human Rights, but particularly Children Rights at the UN, WHO, UNESCO, or UNDCP.
